A Little Off Key
Friday night, we walked downtown with the Mancub, CJ and Aquarius in search of some fine dining. We settled in at a little 50's style diner called "Melodie's", where we had a mediocre meal - the most notable thing being that most of the meal was a couple degrees above cold. Still, the company was good, atmosphere was enjoyable and the service above average. Saturday morning, during his morning internet financial survey, MR. Morticia noticed that the dinner bill was listed for $ 6.95 more than the tag he'd signed. Now we have the unpleasant chore of calling the restaurant to discuss the matter and have the charge reversed. I suggested to MR. Morticia that in the future, he write "TIP ON TABLE" in the appropriate space on the receipt that remains with the restaurant. He thinks that is weird but can't deny that it might prevent future mishaps. Anybody have any other solutions?

I always write "cash" in that space and re-write the total in below before signing.

i agree -- if i'm leaving the tip in cash i'll draw a line through the tip part of the reciept and carry down the total. even though 99.9% of servers will be honest about it, leaving that spot open only invites trouble.
I agree with both comments above. As one who worked 20 years in restaurants, I can attest to the fact that most servers won't scam you, but there are some who will. Let the manager know about it because it's theft, plain and simple.
